The Russian and Norwegian samples are all analysed and some of the results were presented in a joint meeting with County governor of Finnmark (Bente Christiansen and Helen Andersen).

Four presentations were given (in Norwegian):

-Most of food items and human samples from Norway and Russia are now analysed for metals and some POPs.  Data from Finland will be completed in August.

-Questionnaires and interviews in all three countries are completed

- Barents Summer School week 25 arranged by T. Sandanger and E. Anda. Sandanger, Anda, Rautio, Kovalenko, Normann participated in the Summer school. Arja Rautio had a presentation of our project “Food- and Health security”. Panel debate Thursday 19 with strong link to the topic of the project, see  also article in the Barentsobserver.com:

  • Many of the project participants joined the Arctic Frontier conference, Tromsø, Norway- January 21-24.

  • The questionnaire for the food and health security perceptions survey are now sent out to people living in towns and communities in the border region of all three countries.
  • Local food items such as fish, game, berries and mushrooms are now collected in all three countries and will be sent to laboratories for analysis of contaminants such as metals (Ni, Cu, Hg etc) and persistent organic pollutants.
  • Blood sampling of women in the Inari region and in the Nikel region will soon be initiated as part of national birth program in Finland and the Murmansk Birth registry, respectively. The sampling will be combined with interviews and questionnaires and  later electronically connected to the birth registry main database and then analyzed.

  • The questionnaire for the food and health security perceptions survey is now being translated to Russian, Finnish and Norwegian. The survey will be conducted in August-September in towns and communities in the border area.
  • Master students at the University of Tromsø are invited to participate in the project with questionnaires and interviews of local people in Sør Varanger municipality on the topics of food and health security perception
  • Reports are developed on knowledge status, based on literature and ongoing studies on environmental and health impacts, in the Norwegian-Finnish-Russian border area:
  • Literature survey on the radionuclide deposition and transfer along the food chain lichen-reindeer-man in Finnish Lapland has been started.
  • Norwegian report with knowledge status on the Norwegian part (environment and health) of the border area is done.
